Dr. Homi Bhabha Competition

The Dr. Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Competition has been conducted by The Greater Bombay Science Teachers’ Association since 1981 to encourage students of 6th and 9th classes to take interest in science, to inculcate scientific attitude and to search for bright minded students.

Purpose of the Competition:-
1. To encourage students to think scientifically and observe things around them.
2. To connect school science with real-life applications.
3. To identify young scientific talents early and guide them towards higher scientific achievements.
4. To build a foundation for future competitive exams like Olympiads, NTSE, NEET, and JEE.
So, this competition is the first scientific milestone for every student who dreams of becoming a scientist, doctor, or engineer.

Who Can Participate
Students of Standard 6 and Standard 9 (grades) from any recognized board (SSC, CBSE, ICSE, etc.) in India
The exam can be given in English or Marathi medium.

Registering for the competition
Registration is usually done through the school or online on the official G.B.S.T.A. website www.msta.in.

Structure of the Examination:-
The Dr. Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Competition is conducted in four stages:

Stage I-Written Test

Stage II-Practical Test

Stage III-Action Research Project

Stage IV- Interview

STAGE 1: WRITTEN (THEORY) TEST
It is the first round conducted usually in October or November.
The paper has 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) — each carrying 1 mark.
Total marks: 100
Duration: 90 minutes
Questions are based on Physics, Chemistry, Biology and G.K. in the field of Science and Technology.

Based on the performance of written exam first 7.5% of the students per region are considered as eligible for the next stage of the competition. The written test is conducted across several cities in Maharashtra.

Stage II – Practical Round

The exam is usually conducted in a laboratory setup where students have to perform 5 Practicals( For std-6th, Each Exp. carry 6 marks) and 3 Practicals( For 9th Std, Each Exp. carry 10 marks).

Duration: Around 30 min
Marks: 30(Each Practical Experiment carry 6 marks)

The marks are added to out of 30 marks of the written test.First 10 % students from those clearing the practical test become eligible for the action Research Project.

Stage III- Action Research Project

In this stage, The Greater Bombay Teachers’ Association will give you one subject for the Action Research Project. Based on that subject, you have to select one topic and start working on it.

Stage IV- The Interview Round

This is the final stage of the Dr. Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Competition. It‘s called the Interview Round, and it is conducted for all the students who have completed their Action Research Project.

There are 30 marks for the General Interview and another 30 marks for the Action Research Project Interview.

Each stage of the Dr. Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Spardha carries 30 marks.

Selection-

Selection for Medal : Considering 30% marks of Phase I, + Marks score of (Phase II + Phase III + Phase IV)

1. Merit wise Top 10% candidates will get Gold Medal, certificate and scholarship of Rs. 3000/-.
2. Next 60% candidates will get Silver Medal, certificate and scholarship of Rs. 2000/-
3. Remaining all candidates will get Bronze Medal, certificate and scholarship of Rs. 1000/-

 Syllabus-

• For 6th std.-Textbooks of 4th ,5th and 6th std. of Maharashtra State Board and Content related to the above from ICSE, IB and CBSE books
• For 9th std. –Textbooks of VII ,VIII and IX std of Maharashtra State Board  and Content related to the above from ICSE,IB and CBSE books.
